Unimposing Form is an essay book that rethinks the relationship between form and matter in forming practices, including and exceeding sculpture. These essays explore the potential of the work of philosopher and psychoanalyst Luce Irigaray for rethinking forces of sculptural formation through an exploration of the practices of Barbara Hepworth and Lygia Clark. When put into generative dialogue with theory from Jacques Derrida and Suely Rolnik, Irigaray’s conceptualisations of the interval, difference, relation, and affection enable a rethinking of tensions and conventions at play between notions of form and matter.
Prepared double bass and spring, sound work, 2025.
Using a prepared double bass (with a 5 meter long spring attached to the A string), this piece is an amalgamation of x30 morning recordings of approximately 20-minute solo improvisations. Using chance sonic coincidences, this is a loosely composed work looking for surprises. The spring echoes, reverberates and returns to the bass body, and in the process produces a spatial awareness of the resonant studio space. This simple relationship is enough, it produces echoes of outer atmospheric sounds of electromagnetic dawn chorus waves: photons colliding with particles and producing spiralling slinky birdsong. Spiritually, it's as if the birds, insects and amphibians of the swamp's dawn chorus are reverberations of these atmospheric molecular happenings. Deep inside, this coincidence rings with intensities beyond mere coincidence.
